Dimensional weight calculator
Enter a box's outside size and actual weight to see what USPS and FedEx bill it at, and the smallest cut that saves a pound.
Calculator
| Carrier | Measured | in³ | DW | Billable | Save a pound |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| USPS | 16×12×10 | 1,920 | 14 lb | 14 lb | H −1 in → 6 lb |
| FedEx | 16×12×10 | 1,920 | 14 lb | 14 lb | L −1 in → 13 lb |
n/a: USPS bills actual weight at or below 1,728 in³. UPS is not listed until its divisor is confirmed on ups.com; use the custom divisor.
How it works
- Each dimension is rounded by the carrier's own rule: USPS rounds up, FedEx to the nearest inch.
- DW = ⌈L × W × H ÷ divisor⌉. USPS applies it only above 1,728 in³ and caps at the 70 lb price.
- Billable = max(⌈actual⌉, DW). The right-size hint tries cutting 1 to 6 in off each axis.

Reading the result
Measure the closed box on the outside, with any bulge from overfilling, because that is what the carrier's scanner sees. Inside dimensions understate the bill.
If the billable weight is dimensional, the box is the lever, not the product: try the right-size hint, or the inside-to-outside tool to see what board thickness adds.
