FEFCO 0200: Half slotted container (HSC)
A half slotted container is a regular slotted box with the top flaps left off, so it arrives open at the top. It is closed with a separate cover, often a second HSC turned upside down or a telescoping lid.
Dieline
Construction
- Four body panels joined at a manufacturer's joint, exactly as on an RSC.
- Bottom flaps are half the box width, so the two outer bottom flaps meet in the middle.
- The top edge is a plain cut line with no score, which leaves a clean open mouth for top loading.
| Part | Size |
|---|---|
| Outer flaps, bottom | W ÷ 2 |
| Inner flaps, bottom | W ÷ 2 |
| Top flaps | none |
Closure. Bottom taped or glued like an RSC. The top takes a separate cover: a slip lid, a second HSC inverted over it, or a telescoping cap.
Blank size
Blank width is H + W ÷ 2: one set of flaps instead of two, which saves board against an RSC of the same size.
| Board | Nominal blank, in | With allowances, in | Area, ft² |
|---|---|---|---|
| B flute | 57.25 × 16 | 57.75 × 16.13 | 6.47 |
| C flute | 57.25 × 16 | 57.88 × 16.16 | 6.49 |
| BC double wall | 57.25 × 16 | 58.38 × 16.28 | 6.6 |
Allowances add one caliper per vertical score and per flap score. Your box maker sets the real scores. Work out other sizes with the box blank calculator.
Estimated compression strength
Simplified McKee estimate for the empty box at 16 × 12 × 10 in. The flap style barely changes McKee's answer, because it depends on the walls; extra flap layers help with drops and side stacking more than with top-to-bottom load.
Estimate only. Confirm with an ASTM D642 test before relying on it. Run the McKee calculator.
When to use it
Good for
- Parts loaded from above by hand or robot
- Bins and totes inside a warehouse
- Two-piece shipper made of an HSC body and an HSC cover
Watch for
- Needs a second piece to close, so count two blanks per unit
- An open top gives no stacking help until the cover is on
