NMFC Item 222: what it covers

NMFC Item 222 is the part of the National Motor Freight Classification that sets construction standards for fibreboard boxes moving by LTL truck. It links each board grade, by burst strength or edge crush, to the heaviest gross weight and largest size a box of that grade may carry.

What to know

  • The classification is published by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) and sold as a tariff; it is copyrighted.
  • A box built to the rule usually carries a box maker's certificate stating the grade.
  • Packgent has not published the grade, weight and size limits: they could not be checked against the current edition, and figures copied from secondary sources may be out of date.

Limits pending verification. This page is kept out of search until a reviewer checks the figures against the current edition.
